MMU Awards 2023 Acknowledges Exceptional Students, Clubs & Societies

It was such a momentous occasion when the hardwork and dedication of students as well as clubs & societies recognised at the MMU Awards 2023. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU delivered his inspiring speech to the audience during the ceremony at the Bangi Avenue Convention Centre (BACC) on 20 January 2024. Prof. Dato’ expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the award recipients and he challenged the students to embody the GEMS attributes and strive for excellence in every endeavour.

The award ceremony was also enlivened with students’ performances and lucky draws. Among other event attendees were Prof. Dr. Wong Eng Kiong, Vice President of Student Experience and Entrepreneurship Development (SEED), management committee members, faculty deans, committee members as well as staff and students.

MMU President Officiates “Mendongeng” Art Exhibition

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU officiated an art exhibition, “Mendongeng” at the A P Art Gallery on 20 January 2024. The exhibition starts from 20 January until 18 February 2024. Organised by Manggis Group, this event also received the support from the Centre for Alumni (CfA). 

The art exhibitors are MMU alumni Yasmin Malik, Ahmad Lukman as well as MMU lecturers namely Amir Shahlan and Radzi Bedu. Ms.Nazura Rahimie, co-founder of Manggis Group welcomed the distinguished guests to the opening ceremony. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Jeen Wei, Director of Alumni Engagement, Career and Entrepreneurship Development (ACED) together with the Centre for Alumni team also attended the event.

The “Mendongeng” pocket programme will be extended to MMU community on 30 January 2024, where three Permata Dunia from this exhibition will conduct a sharing session at MMU Cinema. All are invited! 

WRC Competition 2024 Unearths Creativity and Innovative Skills among Students

Faculty of Engineering through its student clubs namely Engineering Club Society, IEEE MMU Student Branch and MMU Cybertron co-hosted the World Robotic Centre (WRC) Competition 2024 at the Cyberjaya campus on 18 January 2024. The competition was participated in by more than 200 students from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei. 

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU officiated the closing ceremony of the competition and presented the prizes to the winners on 19 January 2024. In his speech, Prof. Dato’ congratulated the participants for showing their interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activity. The robotic competition helped to foster the students’ creativity and innovative thinking skills. The students competed in four main categories: Sumo Robot, Soccer Robot, Line Follower and Creative Robot.

Also attending the prize giving ceremony were Mr. Zambri Pawanchik, Vice President of Strategic Marketing, Recruitment and Admission; Bapak Eko Wahyu Hidayat, Vice President of WRC; En Azam Azhar, Programme Director, Ir. Prof. Dr. Hezerul Abdul Karim, Deputy Dean of FOE, staff and students.  

Cnergy Receives a Courtesy Visit from LZS

Cnergy received a courtesy visit from Mr. Mohd Zaki Abdul Rahim, Senior Executive of Zakat Consultation Department of Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) on 22 January 2024 at the Cyberjaya campus. The visit witnessed the presentation of a recognition plaque to the Cnergy for their zakat contribution in 2023. The plaque was received by Ms. Nor Adni Ismail, Vice President of Finance and Business Venture. 

The visit was also attended by Mr. Norkhairul Wahab, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cnergy and Mr. Izad Ismail, Director of Yayasan Universiti Multimedia (YUM). The occasion also provided an opportunity for Cnergy to showcase their product offerings and highlight their projects with other sponsored organisations throughout 2023.  

Mr. Khairul also shared some insights on the company’s achievements and initiatives in support of various charitable causes. Moreover, Cnergy also expressed its aspiration to collaborate with LZS for upcoming projects for this year. The exchange of information and mutual appreciation during this courtesy visit further strengthened the tie between MMU, Cnergy, YUM, and LZS, setting a positive tone for future collaborations and engagements. 

Over 400 Students Attend the Digital Business and Cybersecurity Showcase 2024

On 16 January 2024, over 400 students from the Faculty of Business (FOB), Faculty of Information Science & Technology (FIST), and Faculty of Law (FOL) participated in the Digital Business and Cybersecurity Showcase 2024 at the Melaka campus. Organised by the FOB, the event aimed to explore innovative digital business concepts, promote cybersecurity awareness, and ignite entrepreneurial spirit among undergraduates. 

The event showcased students’ projects, which were supervised by their dedicated lecturers and tutors. It also allowed the students to express their creativity, knowledge and expertise in the related domains. Beyond presenting innovative ideas, the showcase also helped to foster essential skills such as teamwork, communication, perseverance, and problem-solving among participating students. 

Dr. Siti Zakiah Bt Melatu Samsi, the FOB dean, officiated the commencement and launching of the event. In her opening speech, she extended a warm welcome to the honorable guests, Mr. Khairil Effendy Dato’ Ahmad Dhman Huri, Founder and Managing Director of Nexagate Sdn Bhd, and Nur Aisyah Abdul Wahid, Chief Human Capital Officer at Nexagate Sdn Bhd. Dr. Siti Zakiah emphasised the significance of the event, acknowledging the valuable participation of the students to showcase innovative digital business ideas and cybersecurity creativities.

An engaging and interactive entrepreneurial sharing session was delivered by Mr. Khairil Effendy in the afternoon session. In the entrepreneurship sharing session titled “Launching Cybersecurity Startups,” he imparted valuable insights with discussions that significantly enhanced the students’ comprehension of the industry, providing students with a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of launching cybersecurity startups. The event concluded on a high note with a prize-giving ceremony, recognising the top 10 outstanding digital business ideas and 8 outstanding cybersecurity ideas.

FCI Students Participate in Industrial Visit to Sasana Kijang, BNM

A total of 22 students from the Faculty of Computing & Informatics (FCI) accompanied by the Career Connect team and Deputy Dean of Student Experience & Alumni of FCI, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Kok Why participated in an industrial visit and tour to Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) on 18 January 2024. The visit aimed to familiarise students with the infrastructure and facilities within a digital workplace.  

The visit commenced with a welcoming speech by Chief Information Officer (CIO), Mr Tay Gim Soon followed by a sharing session by the former Kijang Graduate Programme. The speaker shared on the opportunities for the students to explore the programme and highlight the advantages and benefits of joining the programme. 

The students had the opportunity to tour the IT infrastructures and InnovationLab, followed by an enjoyable visit to the Bank Negara Museum and Financial Service Library. The students also engaged in an interactive Q&A session. It is hoped that our students obtain insightful perspectives and knowledge from the industrial players. 

CfA Engages with Permata Dunia for Alumni Vibes Segment

Centre for Alumni (CfA) continues to engage with prominent alumni for the Alumni Vibes Segment initiative. This segment features successful alumni who are corporate leaders and business owners, where it is categorised into two sessions namely Alumni Business Vibes and Alumni: Up Close & Personal. 

The centre kicked off its engagement with the founder and Managing Director of Ah Ma Liao Café, Mr. Kelvin Tan Chun Hou, Permata Dunia FOM (2014) for Alumni Business vibes segment. In this session, Mr. Kelvin shared his journey after graduation to the entrepreneurial pathway on 22 January 2024 at his cafe in Jonker Walk, Melaka. 

On 24 January 2024, the CfA met with Mr. Fauzul Hazwan Khalid, Vice President of Business Development, COMARNET Sdn. Bhd. Mr. Fauzul graduated from the Faculty of Management (FOM) in 2014. In his sharing session, he elaborated on his challenges in climbing the corporate ladder and shared a few tips on how to overcome it.

FET Students Obtain Industrial Knowledge from Dyson Representative

On 23 January 2024, a total of 14 students from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) showcased their innovative projects under the subject coordination of Dr. Palanisamy Chockalingam at the Robospace, Melaka campus. Each group had to present their work, demonstrating a deep understanding of Additive Manufacturing concepts.

The students’ presentations were evaluated by Mr. Fan Len Peng, Head of Department for SEA Prototyping and Metrology at Dyson. His insightful evaluations added an extra layer of expertise to the judging process, offering valuable industry perspectives to the participating students. The event not only provided a platform for academic exchange, but also bridged the gap between academia and industry, reinforcing the practical applications of Additive Manufacturing.

In a separate event, Mr. Fan also was invited to conduct an industry talk, “Design Engineering the Dyson Way” to 36 Mechanical and Robotics & Automation students on 22 January 2024. The talk unveiled Dyson’s unparalleled commitment to innovation, emphasising their unique approach to solving overlooked problems with groundbreaking inventions.

The speaker provided insights into their relentless dedication to inventing and improving Dyson machines, showcasing an unwavering focus on performance. Mr Fan, with two decades of expertise in Design for Manufacturing and rapid prototyping, offered invaluable real-world perspectives. The session also highlighted opportunities through the James Dyson Foundation, leaving students inspired and equipped with knowledge about the exciting possibilities within Dyson’s world of design engineering excellence.

Acquiring Insightful Information on Port Infrastructure

A total of 28 students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) accompanied by their subject lecturer, Dr Susan Chin were able to enjoy the Northport tour on 24 January 2024. En Syazmir Bin Suhaimi, the Assistant Manager from the Corporate Communications Department conducted the briefing and shared related information during the port tour. Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (Northport), situated at Port Klang, Malaysia is a member of MMC Group, Malaysia’s leading utilities and infrastructure group with diversified businesses under four divisions, namely Ports and Logistics, Energy and Utilities, Engineering, and Industrial Development. 

Northport is one of the largest multi-purpose ports of its kind in the national ports system, offering dedicated facilities and services to handle a wide variety of cargoes ranging from containers to cars, break bulk cargoes as well as liquid and dry bulk cargoes of all types and shipment sizes. Its facilities are located at two locations; in Southpoint for conventional cargo handling, and in Northport where state-of-the-art container and conventional cargo handling facilities are located.

Seizing the opportunities in the expansion of trade fostered by the trend towards globalisation and trade liberalisation, Northport has moved up the value chain by broadening its product base, including through ‘logistical integration’ and increasing its attractiveness to a wider range of shippers and shipping lines. 

The central role played by Northport has been strengthened by its ability to offer an extensive global shipping connectivity. The premier world-class port is now linked to many ports worldwide which are served by major shipping lines including several world-ranking container liner operators offering one of the most comprehensive range of shipping services in the region. It is hoped that the students gained insightful knowledge on the international trade facilitated by the port.

MMU Bags Platinum Award at Putra Brand Awards 2023

It was a moment of pride for Multimedia University (MMU) to be honoured with the highest award achievement, Platinum award in the Education and Learning category at the Putra Brand Awards 2023 held at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya on 19 January 2024. 

The accolade which was received by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President and Chief Executive Officer of MMU together with MMU and TM teams, marks the three consecutive times for MMU to be recognised at this prestigious event. The university first received the Silver award in 2019, Bronze award in 2021 and Gold award in 2022. 

Organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4As) Malaysia, the Putra Brand Award recognises brand building as an integral business investment, measured by consumer preference. 

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham in his social media post expressed his appreciation and gratitude to TM for the continuous support to MMU. He added  “This attainment signifies the trust and confidence of our customers in the university’s commitment to deliver the world-class education as well as to nurture great future digital leaders for the nation’s workforce.” TM also clinched the Platinum Award under the Communication Networks category at the same ceremony.
