FCI Student Represents Malaysia at World Pipe Band Championships 2026

Jaskaran Singh Sidhu, a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.) student from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI), represented Malaysia as a bagpiper with the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band at the World Pipe Band Championships 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Competing in Grade 4A, the band placed 7th out of 30 bands from seven countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Germany, Malaysia and Australia. A total of 211 bands from 14 countries took part in the championship.

The Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band was the only pipe band from Asia to compete in this year’s championship. The band previously won 1st place in Grade 4B at the World Pipe Band Championships in 2019.

Before the World Championships, the band also won 1st place at the Perth Highland Games, a local competition held in Perth, Scotland, as part of its preparations for the championship.

Jaskaran has been playing the bagpipes for six years and joined the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band in February 2026. A few weeks after joining, he was invited to represent the band at the World Championships.

Preparing for the competition while continuing his studies at MMU required him to manage his time between his academic commitments and music. He would often practise the bagpipes for at least an hour each day after returning home from university.

His participation in the World Pipe Band Championships adds another international achievement to his university journey, while allowing him to continue pursuing his interest in music alongside his studies in computing.
