MMU celebrated the rich cultural heritage of East Malaysia through the vibrant Pesta Gawai and Kaamatan 2026, held on 24 June 2026 at its Melaka campus. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Ir. Dr. Zulfadzli Yusoff, Vice President of Student Experience and Entrepreneurship Development, alongside university leaders and representatives from the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Melaka, including its Chairperson, Puan Scholistika Chin.
While Pesta Gawai and Kaamatan traditionally symbolise thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, the celebration at MMU carried a deeper meaning as a reflection of unity, togetherness, and appreciation for the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. The event was officially launched through a symbolic menyumpit (blowpipe) ceremony, representing the resilience, precision, and enduring significance of indigenous traditions from Sabah and Sarawak, while underscoring the importance of preserving these cultural legacies for future generations.
The afternoon unfolded with a vibrant line-up of performances and activities, including traditional dances by MMU’s Kumpulan Sutra Warisan, a cultural fashion showcase featuring ethnic costumes from Sabah and Sarawak, a Best Dress competition, a special singing performance, and a Bamboo Dance presentation by Tingkah Tari. The celebration reached its highlight with a special appearance by Sabahan artiste Elica Paujin, champion of Mentor Milenia 2017 and Big Stage 2022, whose energetic performance brought the festivities to a memorable close while reinforcing the values of inclusivity, mutual respect, and cultural understanding within the MMU community.
