MMU welcomed Ms. Helen Bong from Eco Enzyme Malaysia for an engaging and impactful session titled “Sea Turtle and Eco Enzyme.” The event, organised by the University Peer Group, a student club, aimed to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among staff and students on 10 December 2025.
Ms. Helen introduced participants to turtle hatchery efforts in Malaysia, highlighting the marine conservation initiatives dedicated to sea turtles, such as the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) or Penyu Agar, one of the most frequently encountered species along Malaysian shores. She emphasised the challenges these turtles face, including habitat loss, ocean pollution, plastic ingestion, and chemical contaminants.
Subsequently, Ms. Helen led the audience into an exploration of eco enzyme, a natural, eco-friendly solution that converts organic waste into a multipurpose liquid. She explained how eco enzyme practices promote conscious choices and help reduce household waste, mitigate ocean acidification, minimise chemical runoff, and indirectly support marine ecosystems, including turtle habitats.
The session featured a hands-on demonstration conducted by Ms. Helen and her colleagues, who showed how to produce eco enzyme using simple household materials, which include food waste (e.g., vegetable and fruit peels/rind), brown/molasses sugar, and water. Students had the opportunity to observe and participate in the preparation process, learn practical applications, and understand how small, sustainable actions can collectively contribute to a healthier ecosystem.
An engaging Q&A session rounded off the event, reflecting strong enthusiasm among MMU community towards climate action and conservation efforts. The University Peer Group expressed gratitude to Eco Enzyme Malaysia for their collaboration and aspires to organise more activities that nurture environmental awareness within the campus community.
This session reinforces MMU’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), SDG 13 (Climate action), and SDG 14 (Life below water). Through this session, the university aims to promote environmental stewardship, responsible waste management, and marine conservation awareness among its community.
