We are proud to share that a short film, ‘NDHUK’, by Koo Hui Yin (Cammy Koo) from the Faculty of Cinematic Arts (FCA), has been selected for the NEST competition at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival (SSIFF) in Spain. The competition will be held from 19 to 27 September 2025. Hui Yin’s film, produced as her Final Year Project, will compete among 14 shortlisted works chosen from 473 submissions representing 220 schools across 57 countries.
This marks the first-ever Malaysian and Southeast Asian entry into the highly competitive student film section. By earning this spot, MMU now stands alongside prestigious global institutions such as La Fémis (France), the National Film and Television School (UK), the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU (USA), Columbia University (USA), and the Łódź Film School (Poland).
According to Ts. Shahfeeq Jibin, Dean of FCA, this milestone is not only a proud achievement for MMU but also for Malaysia as a whole. It reflects the world-class quality of young Malaysian filmmakers and demonstrates the university’s vision of nurturing talents capable of telling authentic stories with international impact.
Hui Yin will compete for major accolades, including the Nest – The Mediapro Studio Award (€10,000), the Movistar Plus+ Award, and the Tabakalera Award, which offers a three-week residency in Spain. Founded in 1953, SSIFF is one of Europe’s most important cultural events and a leading global platform for cinema. Over its 73 editions, it has hosted premieres from legendary directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Pedro Almodóvar, and Wong Kar Wai.
We wish Hui Yin all the best!
