A team of final-year students from the Bachelor of Multimedia (Hons.) Virtual Reality programme under the Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) earned international recognition for their project “Layangan Warisan: A Gamified Virtual Reality Experience Preserving Malaysia’s Wau Heritage” at the Virtual Innovation Competition 2025. The innovative project celebrates Malaysia’s traditional kite culture (Wau) through immersive virtual reality, aiming to preserve and promote national heritage in a modern and engaging format. The result was announced on 25 June 2025.
The team consists of Muhammad Faris Fiqran Bin Muhamad, Muhammad Faiz Bin Khairuddin, and Kartika Binti Asnul. They were guided by their supervisors, Mr. Dendi Permadi and Mr. Cheong Soon Nyean. The team emerged as one of the Top 5 winners out of 267 global entries in the Tertiary Science & Technology Category of the competition. In addition to the Top 5 placement, they also clinched the Best Video Award and a prestigious Gold Award for their outstanding work. Notably, the project has also garnered interest from the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negeri (JKKN), which is supporting its continued development through ongoing collaboration.
The award ceremony was officiated by the Honorable Professor Dr. Mohd Afandi Mat Rani, Rector of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kelantan Branch.
