On 23 May 2025, Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) welcomed one of its distinguished alumni, Mr. William Liou Jun Quan, for a sharing session on his professional journey and insights into the operations of data centres. Mr. William Liou, a 2022 graduate in Mechanical Engineering from FET, is currently a Mechanical and Electrical (M & E) Consultant at EWC Engineers Pte Ltd, Singapore.

The session began with Mr. William building rapport with the audience before diving into the core of his presentation, the technical world of data centres operations. He shed light on the multifaceted challenges involved in managing the critical infrastructures, particularly focusing on space optimization for server racks and the essential role of advanced cooling systems.

Drawing from his mechanical engineering background, Mr. William highlighted how foundational engineering principles underpin the design and operation of cooling systems applied to the data centres. He further elaborated on the importance of planning and estimation in data centre logistics, such as calculating water requirements for effective thermal management, a task that demands both technical accuracy and foresight.

A key takeaway from the alumni sharing session was the continuous relevance of engineering education in real-world applications. Mr. William urged students to embrace lifelong learning, adaptability, and curiosity as essential traits for success in an ever-evolving industry. The session concluded with a token of appreciation presented to Mr. William, followed by a group photo session to commemorate the occasion.
