MMU hosted a vibrant Gawai Kaamatan celebration to honour the rich heritage of the Dayak and Kadazan-Dusun communities of East Malaysia on 22 May 2025. The event, graced by the presence of Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU brought together staff, students and invited guests in a joyous celebration of unity, gratitude, and tradition.

The celebration featured captivating performances such as the Magunatip (bamboo) Dance by Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara (JKKN), the Sumazau and Ngajat Tampi dances, as well as a cultural fashion show and traditional music performances. These showcases reflected the vibrant spirit and deep-rooted traditions of Sabah and Sarawak, delighting the audience and promoting cultural appreciation across communities.

The celebration also included prize-giving for the fashion show contest and lucky draw segment, followed by a surprise performance by Bella Astillah and Daniesh Suffian, who energized the crowd. Organised by the student committee with support from Student Lifestyle & Experience (STyLE), the celebration has fostered a strong sense of unity and cultural pride within the MMU community.

By embracing Malaysia’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, the event left attendees with a deeper appreciation for the traditions that unite the nation. Also present at the event were Prof. Ir. Dr. Wong Hin Yong, Vice President of Academic and Innovative Learning (VP AIR), Prof. Dr. Wong Eng Kiong, Vice President of Student Experience and Entrepreneurship Development (VP SEED) and other MMU officers.
