A staff-student team from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) secured the first runner-up title in the “Rekacipta Model Sistem Kawalan Pencemaran Alam Sekitar” competition on 19 October 2019. The competition was organised by Jabatan Alam Sekitar Negeri Melaka in conjunction with the celebration of “Hari Alam Sekitar Negara 2019”. The team walked away with a prize worth of RM2,500, which was sponsored by Petronas.

In this competition, participants are required to present a model designed using recyclable materials in promoting awareness of environmental preservation. FET team had presented, Eco-Friendly Vertical Garden (ECOGARD), a prototype of a vertical garden using recyclable plastic bottles. The ECOGARD is equipped with rain harvesting system which can collect rainwater and utilise it to water the plant, which makes the ECOGARD self-sustainable with minimal human intervention.

The inspiration behind the ECOGARD project originated from MMU students who completed the International Joint Student Exchange program to De La Salle University (DLSU) – Dasmarinas in the Philippines. DLSU is regarded as the 10th Greenest University in Asia. During the program, DLSU shared their knowledge of vertical planting and the FET team implemented the idea back home with some technical enhancements.

Congratulations!
