An external speaker sharing session titled “Beyond the Numbers: Building a Future-Ready Career in Accounting, Taxation & Business Advisory” was held on 3 September 2026 at the Cyberjaya campus. Coordinated by Dr. Sunita Lylia Hamdan and Ms. Hamsatulazura Hamzah, the session featured Mr. Alfred Yong, Founder of AYKS Management Services (M) Sdn. Bhd.
Participants learned about the different career paths available to accounting graduates. Drawing from his experience in the industry, Mr. Alfred shared how an accounting qualification can lead to careers beyond preparing financial statements, including auditing, taxation, business advisory and company secretarial work.
He explained the professional landscape for accountants in Malaysia, including the role of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and the pathway towards becoming a Chartered Accountant Malaysia, or C.A.(M). Students were introduced to professional routes such as becoming an Approved Auditor, Licensed Tax Agent, ASEAN Chartered Professional Accountant, Company Secretary and Approved Liquidator.
Throughout the session, Mr. Alfred shared practical insights into the nature of each career path and the skills needed to succeed. Students were encouraged to consider their own interests and strengths when choosing a career direction, whether they are more inclined towards accounting and financial reporting, auditing, taxation or corporate governance.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of developing skills beyond technical knowledge, including communication, problem-solving, professional judgement and ethical responsibility. Students were encouraged to make use of their time at university to gain relevant experience, continue learning and explore opportunities to engage with professional bodies. Overall, the session provided students with a closer look at the opportunities available within the accounting profession and how their academic knowledge can be applied in the workplace.
