More than one tonne of recyclable materials was collected during MMU Cyberjaya’s inaugural Drive Thru – Trash to Cash @ MMU Cyberjaya programme, marking a significant step in promoting responsible waste management and environmental sustainability within the university and wider community.

Held recently at Dataran Stadium, MMU Cyberjaya, the programme was organised by the Facilities and Management Department (FMD) Cyberjaya, Institusi Usrah (IU), and University Peer Group (UPG), in collaboration with SWCorp. The event brought together members of the MMU community and the public to participate in a convenient and accessible recycling initiative.

As the first recycling event of its kind at MMU Cyberjaya, the programme introduced a drive-thru concept that allowed participants to drop off recyclable materials without leaving their vehicles. This approach not only encouraged greater participation but also provided a practical way for the community to contribute towards more responsible waste management.

The initiative recorded a total collection of 1,097.9 kg of recyclable materials, including paper, cardboard, plastics, used cooking oil, electronic waste, vehicle batteries, and scrap metal. Among the largest contributions were scrap metal at 325 kg, paper and magazines at 229.9 kg, used cooking oil at 205 kg, and vehicle batteries at 152.1 kg.

Beyond diverting recyclable materials from landfills, the programme provided a platform for MMU, government agencies, and the wider community to work together in advancing sustainable practices. The successful turnout and collection demonstrated the value of collective action in encouraging greater environmental awareness and responsible consumption.

The programme also contributed to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), reflecting MMU’s continued commitment to sustainability and positive community impact.
