Business Ethics diploma students from the Faculty of Management (FOM) recently wrapped up a hands-on sustainability project, facilitated by subject coordinator Dr Muhammad Nizam Zainuddin, that gave them more than just course credit. They collected a record-breaking 307kg of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) in a single day, the highest ever for industry partner EcoMinyak.
A total of 126 students, divided into 10 groups, spent five weeks planning and running a “waste-to-wealth” campaign. With guidance from Faculty of Management (FOM) alumnus Mr. Prem Kumar of EcoMinyak, they used TikTok and Instagram to raise awareness about the dangers of improper UCO disposal and the benefits of turning waste into biodiesel.
The project gave students practical experience in teamwork, communication, and community engagement as they convinced local vendors and residents to donate their UCO. The effort came to a head in Week 14 with a large collection drive, showing students firsthand how ethical action can make a real impact.
For the students, the project was more than a success in numbers, it was an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge, develop professional skills, and experience the power of social responsibility. The record-breaking collection proved that ethical business practices can benefit both the environment and the community, while preparing students for future careers with confidence and purpose.
Well done!
