Approximately 150 Form Three and Form Four students from 30 schools across six districts in Perak participated in the Cabaran Kod Morse 2026 Peringkat Negeri Perak, organised by Muzium Telegraf Taiping and Yayasan TM (YTM) at Dewan Rumpun Seri, Kompleks TM Taiping on 12 September 2026, with MMU participating as a Strategic Partner.
The programme provided students with an opportunity to explore the history of communication while developing their interest in technology, problem-solving and cybersecurity. Through a combination of educational activities and interactive challenges, the programme introduced students to different aspects of communication technology in an engaging setting.
As part of MMU’s contribution, the Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Division conducted an interactive cybersecurity awareness activity led by Ms. Siti Husna Abdul Rahman @ Suliman and Ms. Qistina Najwa Mohamad Farid, lecturers from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI). The activity introduced students to basic encryption techniques using a Caesar cipher wheel, where they were challenged to encode and decode secret messages.
Presented through the concept of “thinking like a hacker”, the activity encouraged students to identify patterns, approach problems analytically and understand how basic encryption techniques relate to modern cybersecurity. Rather than relying on a conventional presentation, the game-based format allowed students to learn through direct participation and problem-solving.Prof. Ts. Dr. Ooi Shih Yin, Director of KTT, was also present to support the team and engage with the organisers, teachers and participating students.
The initiative provided MMU with an opportunity to bring its academic knowledge and expertise beyond the campus through an accessible cybersecurity awareness activity. It also allowed the university to establish connections with teachers and schools in Perak, creating opportunities for potential follow-up activities in cybersecurity awareness and education.
The initiative further supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through its focus on accessible technology education and collaboration among the university, industry and community. Through initiatives such as this, MMU continues to strengthen its role in advancing digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness while fostering meaningful partnerships that empower young learners and benefit the wider community.
