MMU hosted an insightful webinar titled, “Corporate Sustainability Careers: Driving Change from Within Organisations” on 13 February 2026, featuring Ms. Evelyn Chee Siew Poh, the Chief Sustainability and Strategy Officer from Leader Energy Group Berhad. The session drew a large crowd (more than 450 participants) comprising students, academics, professionals, and others across Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Thailand, India, and beyond, affirming the university’s commitment to advocating sustainability.

Ms. Evelyn Chee highlighted how sustainability has moved beyond Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to a strategic, cross-departmental function embedded within the governance, operations, finance, human resources, procurement, and communications divisions. Emphasising the theme of “driving change from within,” Ms. Evelyn underscored the role of sustainability professionals in shaping business strategies, managing risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advancing environmental and social performance. She introduced participants to Leader Energy’s renewable energy portfolio spanning solar, hydropower, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and transmission infrastructure across seven Asian markets. As a renewable energy developer with more than 1GW of gross capacity, the company shares its aspiration of achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, aligned with the goals of the United Nations’ Paris Agreement.

Ms. Evelyn also shared about the sustainability management process, including materiality assessments, stakeholder mapping, target setting, performance monitoring, third-party assurance, and ESG disclosures. Participants gained exposure to practical sustainability frameworks and reporting standards, as well as insights into ESG risk management, climate transition opportunities, and biodiversity conservation initiatives. In addition, she shed light on emerging career pathways in corporate sustainability, which include roles in sustainability strategy, environmental management, sustainable finance, ESG reporting, stakeholder engagement, and governance risk and compliance. Ms. Evelyn also emphasised the importance of cross-functional collaboration and the need for future professionals who can integrate environmental and social considerations into core business decisions.

The interactive session concluded with a lively Q&A, where participants engaged in discussions on sustainable procurement practices, Net Zero roadmaps, and the role of innovation and cross-country collaborations in advancing renewable energy solutions.

This webinar reinforces MMU’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality education), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production), SDG 13 (Climate action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals). Through this industry engagement, MMU continues to bridge academia and industry, equipping students, staff, and the wider community with practical insights and preparing them to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development goals and global energy transition.
