MMU hosted an engaging international webinar titled, “Net Zero: Climate Action for a Sustainable Future” on 17 November 2025.  This event convened an enthusiastic audience of university students and staff, alongside other stakeholders from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Egypt, Bangladesh and beyond, reflecting strong regional interest in climate action and sustainable development. Three distinguished speakers shared valuable insights on how diverse efforts towards net zero can drive sustainable solutions, accelerate clean energy transitions, and create a more resilient and equitable future for generations to come.

Mr. Nilson Chong Sin Hau, the Director & Founder of Nichcom Go Sdn. Bhd., presented on ‘From Solar to EV Charging.’ He highlighted the pivotal role of renewable energy and crafting a resilient and well-planned charging infrastructure to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and enabling a low-carbon future, with a focus on user convenience. The second speaker, Ms. Athirah Azlan, the Climate and Environment Youth Participation and Advocacy Coordinator at UNICEF Malaysia shared on ‘Children, Young People & Climate Action.’ Linking children’s rights with the environment and climate change, she emphasised the importance of learning and sharing about climate crisis via writings, social media, and word-of-mouth, as well as participating in regional and international campaigns and networks.

The final speaker Dr. Anggun Puspitarini Siswanto, the Vice Director for Collaborations at Universitas Diponegoro, Indonesia and a Visiting Fellow in RWTH Aachen University, Germany, addressed ‘How to Participate in Achieving Net Zero for a Sustainable Future: The University’s Perspective.’  She focused on how higher education institutions can drive sustainability through education, research, community services, and global partnerships. Examples include promoting low-emissions fuels from biomass and synthetic sources, using battery storage to enhance circular economy, and educating the community about composting.

Dr. Nursuliana Sulaiman from the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, MMU moderated the session and facilitated an insightful Q&A segment, which enabled participants to engage directly with speakers, raising discussions on clean energy technology, green spaces, inclusive urbanisation, climate education, accountability, policy coherence, as well as enhancing cooperation on science, technology and innovation to collect and monitor carbon footprint data to reduce emissions.

This webinar reinforces MMU’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). This international webinar, organised by MMU’s Sustainability Development Committee, highlights the university’s commitment to continuously champion sustainability through collaborative learning, innovation and global engagement.
