Team Malayan Tiger, led by Loh Jinsen, a Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) (Artificial Intelligence) student from the Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FIST), clinched a remarkable double win by securing both the Grand Prize and the Most Outstanding ASEAN Award at the China-ASEAN Artificial Intelligence + Cultural Tourism Innovation Competition 2025 in September 2025. The team, which also comprised another FIST student, Ang Zhen Loong, together with a member from APU, walked away with a cash prize of 200,000 RMB.
Competing against 506 registered teams, with only 50 advancing to the finals with their winning project, TravelMate AI — a multilingual intelligent tour guide and personalized itinerary planning platform that impressed the judges with its creativity and practical impact on cultural tourism.
The competition, jointly organised by the Beihai Municipal People’s Government, Guangxi Department of Culture and Tourism, China Data Development Bureau, Guangxi International Expo Bureau, and others, culminated in the finals in Nanning, Guangxi. In the ASEAN University Category, Team Malayan Tiger stood out against strong contenders from the University of Malaya, National University of Singapore, and the Republic of Indonesia Defense University and others.
In recognition of their success, the Organizing Committee has invited the team to showcase TravelMate AI in the “Competition Achievement Zone”, jointly built with the Beihai Municipal Government, where their innovation will be featured to leaders, experts, and the public.
This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to Jinsen’s and Zhen Loong’s creativity, talent, and hard work, and it reflects FIST and MMU’s commitment to nurturing future-ready innovators in the field of AI and technology.
Once again, congratulations to Jinsen and Zhen Loong on bringing pride to FIST, MMU, and Malaysia!
