In line with promoting Personal Social Responsibility (PSR), a group of students from the Diploma in Accounting and Diploma in Business Administration programmes from the Faculty of Business (FOB) accompanied by Ms. Lim Su Yin, FOB lecturer visited the Tzu Chi Education and Recycling Centre in Ayer Keroh, Melaka in May 2025. The visit formed part of a PSR project aimed at nurturing environmental consciousness, social engagement, and essential soft skills among students.
The day began with a warm welcome by Tzu Chi volunteers, who provided a detailed briefing on the recycling process and guided students through the centre’s Environmental Awareness Exhibition. The exhibition emphasised the importance of sustainable living and introduced the students to the 5R principles: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle — encouraging individuals to say no to plastic and polyfoam while adopting more sustainable habits.
The students then rolled up their sleeves and participated in hands-on recycling activities, assisting in the sorting of paper waste into four key categories: black-and-white paper, coloured paper, carton boxes, and newspapers. This practical involvement allowed students to experience first-hand how small individual actions can lead to meaningful environmental impact.
This PSR project was designed with three key objectives in mind. First, it aimed to promote environmental awareness by exposing students to real-world recycling practices and the importance of sustainability. Second, it sought to encourage social responsibility by engaging students in purposeful community service that fosters empathy and civic engagement. Third, the experience helped enhance teamwork and soft skills, such as communication, time management, and collaboration, through active participation in a charitable and cooperative environment.
For many students, the visit was an eye-opening and enriching experience. It not only deepened their understanding of environmental issues but also helped them connect with the local community and recognise the value of giving back. More importantly, it served as a platform for cultivating values-driven leadership among young individuals who are ready to contribute positively to both society and the planet.
