As part of the university’s ongoing Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP), a financial literacy outreach titled “Financial Health Check-Up and Scam Awareness Workshop” was successfully conducted at Pusat Komuniti Desa Paya Ikan, Bukit Bayan, Bukit Katil on 3 June 2025.
This impactful session was led by a team of dedicated MMU academics from the Faculty of Business (FOB)—Ms. Siti Zarifah binti Amir, Dr. Siti Zakiah binti Melatu Samsi, Dr. Tariqul Islam, Dr. Afandi bin Yusof, and Ms. Kausar Yaakup. The team represented two key research centres: the Centre for Accounting, Finance and Economics (CAFE) and the Centre for Management and Marketing Innovation (CMMI), which operate under the Centre of Excellence (COE) for Sustainability and Governance and the COE for Business Innovation and Communication, respectively.
This third community engagement initiative attracted 30 enthusiastic participants from GiatMARA, who are currently undergoing technical training but have had limited exposure to financial education. Recognising the importance of equipping youth for financial independence, the KTP modules introduced essential tools such as the Wheel of Life exercise and a Budget Tracker, empowering them to plan and manage their personal finances effectively. Participants also learned the fundamentals of budgeting, including how to create a simple yet practical budget tailored to their income and lifestyle.
In addition, the workshop raised awareness about financial scams, covering topics such as online fraud, fake investment schemes, and common scam tactics. Participants received hands-on guidance on identifying red flags and safeguarding themselves and their families from becoming victims. Through initiatives like these, MMU continues its mission to uplift communities by equipping them with relevant knowledge and life-ready skills for a more informed and secure future.
