Let us extend our warmest congratulations to Keefe Loh, Gan Zi Xuan, Joshua Christiyan Robert, Heng Pooi Leng and Gan Zi Xuan, our talented Cinematic Arts students, for their recent achievement! Their documentary titled “Waves of Life” was showcased at the prestigious Visions du Réel (VdR) International Film Festival’s in Nyon, Switzerland. This esteemed international documentary film festival, held from 14 until 17 April 2024, provided a platform for their remarkable work to shine.

Waves of Life” explores the experiences of a fisherman and his family belonging to the Mah Meri indigenous community. Their home is an isolated island close to Pulau Ketam, Selangor, where they confront significant daily challenges. Kamal, a dedicated father, relies on ancestral fishing methods to provide for his family. Despite the obstacles they face, they often travel to a nearby Chinese fishing village to obtain essential and sell seafood. In uncertainty, they grapple with parenthood’s responsibilities while embracing their rustic way of life.

Through this documentary, the students aimed to shed light on their difficulties and encourage greater understanding of the hardships encountered by this community, whose contributions to Malaysian society often go unnoticed.

Well done!
