Gaining Insights on Embracing Failure and Career Challenges

On 18 September 2026, the Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FIST) hosted an Alumni Sharing session featuring Mr. Tey Han Jieh, an FIST alumnus and Associate Principal Analyst at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCSS), Singapore. Held under the theme “Don’t Be Afraid to Fail. Be Afraid Not to Try,” the session provided students with insights into his academic and professional journey, as well as the experiences that have shaped his career.

Drawing from his experiences, Mr. Tey encouraged students to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks and step beyond their comfort zones. He emphasised that failure can be part of the learning process, helping individuals develop resilience, strengthen problem-solving skills and grow both personally and professionally. He also encouraged students to remain curious, take initiative and explore opportunities even when success is not guaranteed.

The session also offered perspectives on preparing for the workplace, adapting to changing professional demands and continuously developing new skills. His message, “Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try,” reminded students of the importance of taking the first step and learning from every experience along the way. The session began with a welcome by Ms. Lim Ke Yin, a PhD (IT) student from FIST, and concluded with closing remarks by Ts. Dr. Sumendra Yogarayan, Deputy Dean of Postgraduate and Collaborations, who expressed appreciation to Mr. Tey for returning to FIST to share his experiences with the university community.

The Alumni Sharing session provided current students with an opportunity to gain first-hand perspectives from an alumnus working in the industry, while highlighting the value of continued alumni engagement in supporting students’ career development and professional growth.
