A total of 45 students from MMU participated in the Rakan Muda: Bakau Lestari 2026 programme, held from 5 to 7 June 2026 at Pulau Tanjung Surat, Johor. The closing ceremony was graced by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU, together with Prof. Ir. Dr. Zulfadzli Yusoff, Vice President of Student Experience and Entrepreneurship Development; Mr. Ruhisyam Ibrahim, District Youth and Sports Officer of Kota Tinggi; Mr. Haji Mohd Lazim Atan, Head of Tanjung Surat Village; Mrs. Badariah Ayob, Chairperson of the Pulau Tanjung Surat Mangrove Friends Association; and other MMU officers.

Organised by the MMU Rakan Muda Secretariat with the support of various parties, the three-day, two-night programme carried the theme “Akar Kukuh, Khazanah Terjamin” and aimed to cultivate environmental awareness, social responsibility, and volunteerism among youths. The programme focused on preserving the mangrove ecosystem through various conservation activities, including the planting of 300 mangrove saplings and the cleaning of surrounding coastal areas.

Participants were also exposed to the importance of mangrove ecosystems and biodiversity, while gaining a deeper understanding of the role these natural habitats play in protecting coastal communities and supporting marine life. Throughout the programme, students worked closely with the local community and environmental advocates, fostering teamwork, leadership, and a strong sense of civic responsibility. The initiative provided valuable hands-on experience that complemented their academic learning and encouraged them to contribute positively to society.

The closing ceremony also witnessed the distribution of essential items to members of the asnaf community as part of the programme’s community outreach initiative, reflecting the participants’ commitment to social responsibility and compassion towards those in need.

It is hoped that the knowledge, experiences, and values gained throughout the programme will inspire participants to continue championing environmental stewardship and volunteerism, while strengthening their character as future graduates who are committed to serving society and protecting the nation’s natural heritage.
