
A delegation of accounting lecturers from MMU, led by Dr Abby Ashraff Saprudin, Deputy Dean of Student Experience & Alumni of FOM,participated in the MARA International Accounting Conference (MICA) 2026, held on 21–22 April 2026 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
The conference, themed “Future-Ready Accounting: Navigating the Digital Frontier and Beyond,” brought together academics and industry practitioners to discuss the evolving role of accounting in the digital era. It was officiated by Datuk Wira Dr. Ashraf Wajdi Dato’ Dusuki, Chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA). The session was also attended by MMU President, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud.
Key discussions focused on the impact of digital transformation on the accounting profession, particularly the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and data analytics. Speakers highlighted how these technologies are reshaping accountants’ roles from traditional reporting functions to strategic advisory responsibilities, while also emphasising the importance of digital literacy, critical thinking, and data-driven decision-making.
The conference also placed strong emphasis on sustainability and integrated reporting, with sessions highlighting the increasing role of accountants in supporting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. Ethical awareness and professional integrity were also underscored as critical competencies in navigating today’s complex business environment.
Another major focus was the transformation of accounting education. Speakers encouraged curriculum innovation through the integration of digital tools, experiential learning, and stronger industry collaboration, alongside the development of soft skills such as adaptability, communication, and lifelong learning.
MMU’s participation provided valuable exposure to emerging trends and innovative teaching practices that can be incorporated into its accounting programme. Overall, MICA 2026 served as a meaningful platform for knowledge exchange and professional development, with insights gained expected to support continuous enhancement of teaching, research, and curriculum development at MMU in line with global developments in the accounting profession.
