On 24 January 2026, the Faculty of Law in collaboration with the Multimedia University Law Society (MULS), hosted Law Seminar 2026 under the theme “The Voices of Law: Protests, Power and Constitutional Freedoms.” The seminar was officiated by Prof. Dr. Hishammuddin Ismail, Director of the Melaka Campus, and graced by a VIP guest, the Chairperson of the Melaka Bar, adding prestige to the event.
The seminar featured an esteemed panel of legal experts, including Tun Dato’ Seri Zaki bin Tun Azmi, Chancellor of Multimedia University, Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Hj. Shad Saleem Faruqi, Professor Dr. Andrew James Harding, Professor Tania Groppi, with the forum session moderated by our very own Professor Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal bin Nik Mahmood. Together, they guided participants through an in-depth examination of constitutional freedoms, civic participation, and the balance of state authority within Malaysia’s democratic framework.
Central discussions focused on freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, highlighting the ongoing tension between individual liberties and public order. The speakers emphasised the judiciary’s critical role in ensuring that restrictions on fundamental freedoms remain reasonable, proportionate, and consistent with the rule of law.
Through comparative analysis and interactive sessions, students gained unique insights into how Malaysian courts protect constitutional rights while maintaining public order and democratic stability. The seminar fostered critical engagement, encouraging participants to reflect on the challenges of safeguarding democratic space in contemporary Malaysia.
By bringing together distinguished scholars, practitioners, and students, Law Seminar 2026 provided a premier platform for informed dialogue on issues central to Malaysia’s constitutional and democratic development, showcasing the leadership of the Faculty of Law and Multimedia University Law Society in promoting legal education and civic engagement.
