The Government-Linked Universities (GLU) Malaysia and the Aliansi Perguruan Tinggi Badan Usaha Milik Negara (APERTI-BUMN) Indonesia convened in Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia, for a Collaboration Workshop that marked more than a single event. The workshop, which was held from 11 until 14 January 2026, symbolised a strategic partnership founded on shared aspirations to strengthen higher education collaboration between Malaysia and Indonesia through structured, long-term engagement.

Both alliances reaffirmed their shared values in advancing quality, relevance, and impact in higher education. Malaysia and Indonesia share a common commitment to academic excellence, industry alignment, and societal contribution, positioning universities as key enablers of national development and regional progress. These shared principles provide a strong foundation for deeper cooperation between GLU Malaysia and APERTI-BUMN Indonesia.

The workshop also highlighted the growing importance of regional collaboration in addressing global challenges, talent mobility, and evolving industrial demands. Participants recognised that closer cooperation among universities is critical to developing future-ready graduates, enhancing collaborative research, and ensuring higher education remains responsive to regional and global needs.

The objectives of the workshop were to revisit and consolidate shared goals and collaboration areas, align the strategic directions of both alliances, identify core strategic pillars, and develop concrete and actionable work programmes. These efforts were structured under four agreed pillars, namely Academic, Research, Student Development, and Sustainability & Governance, to guide future joint initiatives.
