The Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) welcomed its alumnus, Mr. Gan Wei Tian, for a guest lecture titled “From Engineering to Industry: A Sales Engineer’s Perspective on Professional Practice” on 25 September 2026.
A Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Class of 2023, Mr. Gan is currently a Sales Engineer at Dickson Unigage Sdn. Bhd., an engineering solutions company specialising in temperature regulation and environmental monitoring and control. During the session, he shared his career journey, including his experience in the oil and gas refinery industry and his transition into sales engineering.
Drawing from his professional experience, Mr. Gan highlighted that engineering practice extends beyond technical knowledge. He shared the importance of effective communication, understanding clients’ needs and being able to identify potential issues that may not be immediately apparent.
He also discussed the professional responsibilities involved in engineering practice, including the need for sound technical judgement, proper documentation and awareness of the implications of engineering decisions. Through examples from his work, he illustrated how real-world engineering projects can present challenges that may not be apparent at the outset.
The session gave students an opportunity to hear directly from an alumnus about the transition from university to professional practice and the realities of working in the engineering industry. It also highlighted the importance of combining technical knowledge with communication, professional responsibility and practical problem-solving skills.
The guest lecture reflects FET’s continued efforts to connect students with industry and alumni, providing them with practical perspectives that complement their academic learning and help them better understand the expectations of the engineering profession.
