Trash4Cash Event Promotes Recycling and Sustainability on Campus

Staff and students at the MMU Cyberjaya campus came together to support recycling and responsible waste management through the Trash4Cash event held on 21 September 2026. The initiative was organised by the Facilities Management Department (FMD) in collaboration with two group students, Re-Leaf and Turn It Green from the Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) under the Personal Social Responsibility (PSR) programme, coordinated by Dr. Yong Chyn Chye from the Learning Institute for Empowerment and advised by Prof. Ts. Dr. Koo Ah Choo from FCM. Trash4Cash served as the recycling collection partner for the initiative.

Planning for the event began in August 2026, with PSR student volunteers involved in promoting the campaign, collecting recyclable materials and preparing them for the collection day. Recyclables gathered from around the campus included cardboard, white paper, coloured paper, metal, plastic and glass. On the day of the event, the collected materials were transported to the stadium, where MMU divisions, staff and students also brought their own recyclables for cash redemption. Student volunteers worked alongside FMD and Trash4Cash to unload, sort and weigh the materials throughout the collection session.

The event received an encouraging response from the campus community, with the recyclable materials collected generating funds that will be contributed to the Malaysian Nature Society’s Tiger Fund, extending the initiative’s impact beyond recycling to wildlife conservation.  Beyond recycling, the Trash4Cash initiative provided students with hands-on experience in teamwork, project management and environmental responsibility. It also highlighted how collective efforts within the university community can turn everyday waste into meaningful contributions towards sustainability and wildlife conservation.
