The Alliance of Government-Linked University (GLU) comprising of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Multimedia University (MMU), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) launched their collaborative effort in offering Massive Open Online Classes (MOOCs), Open Electives, and GLUMinor courses starting September 2021. More than 100 attendees participated in the launching ceremony, which was officiated by Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Vice-Chancellor of UTP cum Chairman of GLU on 28 June 2021. Prof. Dr. Ho Chin Kuan, Vice President of Academic and International Relations (VP AIR) cum Head of GLU Academic Pillar also delivered his remarks during the ceremony.

Through this initiative, all students from four universities will be able to enjoy courses from other universities, build a stronger network between each other as well as experience different learning experiences. Also attending the ceremony were Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, MMU President; Prof. Ir Dr. Hilmi Mukhtar, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UTP; Prof. Dato’ Dr. Siti Salbiah Mohamed Shariff, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research) UNITEN; Prof. Dr. Shahrulniza Musa, Deputy President (Academic & Technology) UniKL; deans, directors of academic centers, and GLU officers.

The MOOCs refer to a structured curriculum with its Course Learning Outcomes, Course Description/Synopsis, Course Contents, Learning Activities, Course Duration, and Course Assessment. It is facilitated by at least an instructor whether it is offered as in session or a self-paced mode. As for open electives, the courses are designed not only for knowledge acquisition but to create a certain view of the world as well as to provide additional competencies required for the competitive future work environment.

Apart from that, students are able to explore and expand their knowledge on the niche areas offered by GLU through GLUMinor courses namely Oil and Gas (UTP), Energy (UNITEN), Aviation (UniKL), and ICT & Creative Multimedia (MMU).  These additional courses are taken outside of the prescribed programme structure to enhance students’ knowledge in certain fields of their interest. It is hoped that our students obtain insightful and memorable learning experiences with this offering.
