At the World Press Freedom Day Forum on 3 May 2017, students of FAC’s Bachelor in Strategic Communication programme learned about the critical role of free and quality journalism in promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. Held at Kumpulan Media Karangkraf, Shah Alam, the forum was co-organised by students from University Technology Mara and other private universities.
This year, World Press Freedom Day carried the theme “Critical Minds for Critical Times” highlighting the importance of press freedom and availability in providing access to justice for all and strengthening effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels of society.
Panellists on the forum included well-known personalities in the country such as Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar, Chairman of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF), Mr Sharaad Kuttan of BFM Business Radio and Ms Annette Gartland an Irish journalist based in Southeast Asia and a few others.
While introducing students to the differing needs of the various media industries, this forum provided a good platform for them to experience the real journalist world and common principles such as accuracy, honesty and integrity in journalism writing. Our students also took the opportunity to engage in discussion and critique of on-going news coverage in and beyond Malaysia to develop their news judgment.
