A new collaboration between Multimedia University (MMU) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) is set to strengthen Malaysia’s creative film ecosystem, particularly in bridging academia and industry while nurturing future cinematic talents. The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at MMU Cyberjaya on 13 April 2026.

The pact was signed between Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU and Dato’ Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, Chief Executive Officer of FINAS, where it was witnessed by Dato’ Hans Isaac, the Chairman of FINAS.

The MoU reflects a shared commitment to close the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Under this collaboration, FINAS will contribute to curriculum development, provide access to industry networks, and support knowledge transfer through the involvement of industry experts and resource sharing.

MMU will offer its academic expertise and research capabilities to support joint initiatives, while facilitating student and staff participation in FINAS programmes. The university will also provide campus facilities for collaborative activities, creating more opportunities for students to gain industry exposure and showcase their talents on broader platforms.

In addition, MMU will implement professional recognition through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), enabling industry practitioners to obtain formal academic qualifications based on their experience. This collaboration is expected to further strengthen the national creative ecosystem while supporting the continued growth of Malaysia’s film and creative sector.

Also attending the ceremony were Prof. Ts. Dr. Lau Siong Hoe, Vice President of Market Exploration, Engagement & Touchpoint, Ts. Shahfeeq Jibin, Dean of Faculty of Cinematic Arts (FCA), Ms. Nadia Mahmud, Dean of Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) and other MMU officers.

On 15 April 2026, an international collaborative research seminar on information processing was held at the MDEC lab, Cyberjaya campus. Jointly organised by MMU, Université de La Rochelle, France, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), this seminar marked another milestone in the ongoing France-Malaysia academic partnership. The closing was graced by the presence of Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, President of MMU.

This seminar is part of the France–Malaysia Collaboration for Joint Research (MyTIGER), a bilateral grant initiative introduced by the Embassy of France in Malaysia in 2022. The programme aims to strengthen research collaboration between higher learning institutions in both countries. This latest seminar represents the third instalment of the initiative, following earlier sessions held in March 2023 and December 2024, alongside a series of monthly virtual engagements between participating researchers.

MMU, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noramiza and Dr. Wan Noorshahida from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI), together with their collaborator from Université de La Rochelle, Associate Professor Dr. Petra Gomez, were among the pioneering recipients of the MyTIGER grant. Their proposal was selected from 50 submissions and underwent rigorous evaluation by a scientific committee under France’s Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Among the key research outcomes presented was the development of a specialised dataset for small object detection from aerial views in outdoor environments. The dataset, developed by Ms. Shahbe from FCI and Centre for Image and Vision Computing (CIVC), incorporates objects with and without shadows, addressing a critical challenge in outdoor surveillance and advancing research in computer vision.

Building on this success, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noramiza secured a second MyTIGER grant in 2025, focusing on heart sound analysis. The project will also include co-supervision of a postgraduate candidate between MMU and Université de La Rochelle, further strengthening academic collaboration.

MMU recorded its appreciation to its collaborators from Université de La Rochelle and UniKL, as well as to all organisers, presenters, and participants. The University will continue to strengthen such collaborations to support impactful research and institutional progress.

On 2 April 2026, the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence & Engineering (FAIE), in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), and the IEEE Student Branch, organised a Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP) at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jugra in Banting, Selangor.

Led by Dr. Teh Chin Hui and Ir. Dr. Siva Priya Thiagarajah, the initiative aimed to introduce students to solar energy systems and inspire interest in engineering and sustainable technology.

The programme began with a Photovoltaic (PV) Technology Fundamentals workshop conducted by Dr. Teh Chin Hui. Students were introduced to the basic components of a solar energy system, including solar panels, charge controllers, batteries, and simple electrical loads such as USB-powered fans and lights. The session was delivered through an interactive presentation to strengthen conceptual understanding.

In the second phase, students participated in a hands-on activity where they assembled a functional solar system using the components provided. The setup was then taken outdoors, allowing students to observe how sunlight is used to charge the system while presenting their work to the FAIE team.

As part of the initiative, the team also supported the installation of solar-powered lights around the school compound, contributing to the practical application of sustainable energy solutions.

The programme is expected to spark greater interest among students in engineering and STEM fields, while encouraging exploration of renewable energy and sustainable innovation as future career pathways.

A group of Diploma in Digital Business students from the Faculty of Business (FOB) took experiential learning beyond the classroom during a visit to a real-world retail environment as part of their Digital Business Venture & Strategy course on 9 April 2026. The initiative aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of digital transformation by exposing them to industry settings and challenge-based learning with the theme “Reinvent the Big Bad Wolf experience into a digital journey”.

Guided by Mr Vincent Chan, students were given the opportunity to observe large-scale retail operations and customer engagement in action. The learning experience was designed to encourage students to think critically about how digital solutions can enhance traditional business models.

During the session, students were assigned a challenge to reimagine the retail experience into a digital journey. Working in groups, they explored innovative ideas to improve customer convenience, enhance engagement, and create more immersive and interactive experiences through technology.

Following the on-site engagement, students returned to class to refine and present their ideas. Among the proposals developed were gamified “treasure hunt” concepts to enhance product discovery, as well as smart navigation solutions to assist customers in locating items more efficiently within a large-scale retail environment. The activity demonstrated how experiential and challenge-based learning can strengthen creativity, problem-solving skills, and digital innovation capabilities among students.
