Message from the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alan Tan Wee Chiat

Engineering is the art and science of problem solving, from the very mundane (e.g., coin dispenser) to the extraordinary (e.g., teleportation, think Star Trek). The engineering discipline has always attracted people of great enterprise and ambition. Some notable ones include Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, and more recently, Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the WWW), all of whom have had the courage to lose sight of the shore to look beyond the horizon.

An education in engineering prepares one to be learned in the art and science of problem solving. Not so much to master these skills, but to develop an acute understanding of knowing what can/cannot be done and how to do it, given a problem. The engineering education is not just confined to the classroom walls, but goes on beyond. In fact, we are continually driven to prepare our students to be lifelong learners in a world that is increasingly dependent on technology.

All our programmes are accreditated by the accreditation bodies, and we are determined to continually improve the teaching and learning experience of our students. At the same time, we are commited to provide our students with rigorous, cutting-edge and industry-relevant education to enable them to secure a steady foothold in the job market upon graduation. Our good track record of high graduate employability is a testimony of this.

Opportunities are abound for our students to develop interpersonal skills and independence, through joining clubs and societies, organizing events, or participating in competitions. And speaking of competitions, recently our students have challenged the streets of Manila in the Phillipines at the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 competition with their groundbreaking Eco-V3 Grüne Welt; they were the sole representative of Malaysia at the flag-off ceremony.

On behalf of the faculty, I welcome you to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology as you take your first step towards an education in engineering. Research

In order to advance research in the broad sphere of Multimedia and to support faculty members to innovate and create new technologies, products and processes, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) has set-up two University Centres of Excellence (UCoE), two Research Centres, and two Special Interest Groups. The main objective of these centres and groups is to group academics and students with similar interests in a specified field of research to start working on identified research projects.

We also promote strategic co-operation through joint ventures between institutions and industries locally, regionally and globally. Infineon Technologies, Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency (ARSM) and Melaka General Hospital are among the few industries with active collaborations.
