Data Communications and Networking

This three-year programme concentrates on data communications and networking technology, adapting students to building and managing network systems. The faculty strives in equipping Data Communications and Networking graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to design, build, maintain and manage network and communication systems in any given organisation. Students will initially be exposed to the core components such as Computer Architecture and Organisation, Data Communications and Networking, Computer Programming, Object Oriented Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics and Probability, Database Systems, Systems Analysis and Design, Mathematical Techniques and Operating Systems.

The fundamentals are then further enhanced with intense exposures on specialisation subjects such as:

The programme also offers students electives such as Computer Security, Ethical Hacking and Security Assessment, Semantic Web Technology, Information Systems Audit, Cyber Law on E-Commerce, Pattern Recognition and IT Project management Methods and Tools – to name a few.

Students will later on embark on an industrial training experience, where they will be assigned to undergo a practical semester in a real working environment to help them prepare for the career world. Ultimately, the faculty expects graduates to branch into areas of communication and apply the knowledge they have acquired in the network technology and telecommunications fields. Potential career prospects for the Data Communications and Networking graduates include System Programmer, Network Engineer, and Network Administrator.

Entry Requirements

Either of the following:
    • Pass Foundation  in related field from a recognised institution, and a credit in Mathematics at O Level or its equivalent
    • Pass A Level or its equivalent with 3 principals inclusive of Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at O Level or its equivalent
    • Pass Diploma in a related field from a recognised institution with minimum CGPA 2.50 and a credit in Mathematics at O Level or its equivalent
    • Pass any other Diploma in science and technology or business studies from recognized institution with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and a credit in Mathematics at O Level or its equivalent may be admitted subject to a rigorous internal assessment process.

AND

    • A minimum score of 5.5 for IELTS or its equivalent

Note: *Candidates with CGPA below 2.50 but above 2.00 may be admitted subject to a rigorous internal assessment process.

Either of the following:
  • Pass Foundation / Matriculation in related field from a recognised institution, and a credit in Mathematics at SPM level or its equivalent
  • Pass STPM / A Level or its equivalent with 3 principals inclusive of Mathematics and a credit in Mathematics at SPM Level or its equivalent
  • Pass UEC with minimum of grade B in a least five (5) subjects inclusive of Mathematics and English
  • Pass Diploma in a related field from a recognised institution with minimum CGPA 2.50 and a credit in Mathematics at SPM Level or its equivalent
  • Pass any other Diploma in science and technology or business studies from recognized institution with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and a credit in Mathematics at SPM Level or its equivalent may be admitted subject to a rigorous internal assessment process.
