Purpose of Honorary Doctorate Award

The Honorary Doctorate is the highest honour conferred by the Multimedia University (MMU) to individuals in recognition of proven exceptional leadership, excellence and contributions in their respective profession or field of work that had the demonstrated effect to advance a field of arts, science, engineering, law, philosophy, knowledge science, life sciences, management, economics and humanity.

Definition and Scope of Award

2.1 MMU may grant the following Honorary Doctorate Award to deserving recipient(s) whose work and achievement has significantly advanced the mission and values of the University:-
 
i) Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon.D.Sc.)
ii) Honorary Doctor of Knowledge Science (Hon.D.Know.Sc)
iii) Honorary Doctor of Arts (Hon.D.Arts)
iv) Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon.D.Ltt.)
v) Honorary Doctor of Economy (Hon.D.Econ.)
vi) Honorary Doctor of Management (Hon.D.Mgt.)
vii) Honorary Doctor of Law (Hon.D.Law)
viii) Honorary Doctor of Engineering (Hon.D.Eng.)
ix) Honorary Doctor of Life Sciences (Hon.D.LifeSci.)
ix) Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Hon.D.Phil.)
x) Other Honorary Doctorate titles, where appropriate and approved by the MMU University Senate and endorsed by the UTSB Board.

Award Presentation

3.1 Normally not more than two (2) Honorary Doctorate awards shall be awarded in a year and none shall be awarded if there is no suitable recipient.
3.2 Honorary Doctorate awards are conferred during the MMU Convocation Ceremonies or in any other ceremony deemed fit by MMU.
3.3 Recipients of Honorary Award must attend the ceremony to receive the honor. Recipients of Honorary Award shall be expected to address the ceremony.
3.4 Notwithstanding Item 4 below, Honorary Doctorate awards shall also be conferred to individual person who may have demised and that such Award can be received by his/her immediate family member.

Criteria for the Award of Honorary Doctorate

The recipient of the Honorary Doctorate of MMU shall have met ALL of the following:-
4.1 By way of his/her cumulative work and contribution who is deemed to be exceptional leaders and have forged significant and unusual breakthroughs in their field of excellence. The impact of the recipient’s contribution shall be one that could advance a field or branch of knowledge or one that challenges traditional theory or beliefs.
4.2 Has made an outstanding contribution to the MMU’s Mission and Objectives and MMU’s standing as an internationally reputed institution.
4.3 The recipient shall be an individual with high intellect and possesses the highest moral and ethical standards.
4.4 The recipient shall have extraordinary accomplishment and achievements that have ongoing and significant importance and have notably demonstrated these qualities in his/her actions and accomplishments.

Benefits

5.1 Recipients of Honorary Doctorate shall be entitled to cite the official award abbreviation as a qualification in all situations and for all correspondence. The title does not confer any entitlement or place any obligation upon the holder, beyond the usage of the title itself.
5.2 An Honorary Doctorate recipient is not an employee of the University, receives no remuneration from the University and is not obliged to undertake any of the responsibilities in the University.
5.3 An Honorary Doctorate recipient shall have free access to library and sporting facilities and any other facilities that the President of MMU may want to grant.
5.4 An Honorary Doctorate recipient shall also be provided with free accommodation and transport in attendance to Convocation Ceremonies or in any other ceremonies subject to the President’s approval and applicable University policies and procedures in force.

Revocation of the Title

MMU may, at its sole discretion and by a majority vote of Senate and a majority vote of the Board of Directors, revoke the title of Honorary Doctorate when the title holder has been found guilty of a criminal offence or with fraud, or has been engaged in activities which have brought disrepute to the University.

Nomination

7.1 The President of MMU shall call for nominations for the award of Honorary Degrees annually 6 months prior to the university’s Convocation or at any other time that the Honorary Degree Committee deems fit.
7.2 The President of MMU shall invite MMU Senate, Top Management Committee, Alumni Society members and members of the UTSB’s Board of Directors to submit nominations for the award of the Honorary Degree.
7.3 The nomination must be made by 1 proposer and 3 seconders. The proposer and seconders must posses the authority/capability/knowledge to confirm the contributions made by the nominee and the Honorary Degree Committee may request the proposer or seconder to appear before the committee for verification of the nominees credentials.
7.4 Nomination shall be made in writing to the President of MMU complete with full biodata and supporting documents of the nominee. Supporting documentation may include, but not limited to curriculum vitae, extracts from who’s who, published personality profiles etc.
7.5 Nomination shall remain active for a maximum of three years after which it shall be removed from the list of nominees if a decision could not be arrived at.
7.6 The Honorary Degree Committee may identify additional names to be considered for the award of Honorary Degrees.

Assessment

8.1 Nominations shall be evaluated by the Honorary Degree Committee of MMU.
8.2 The Honorary Degree Committee shall consist of:-
(i) The Chairman of MMU Board as the Chairman
(ii) The President of MMU
(iii) One (1) representative of the Senate who is a senior academic at professorial level
8.3 Deliberations of the Honorary Degree Committee shall be confidential.
8.4 The name and full details of the selection by the Honorary Degree Committee shall be submitted to the Senate of the University for deliberation and confirmation of the award, thereafter presented to the MMU Board for information.
