Brief History of MMU Melaka Physical Development

PHASE 1 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT 1996


January 1996
The Malaysian government decided to upgrade Institute Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM) at Bukit Beruang Melaka to be University Telekom (UNITELE) based on a press statement by the Education Minister at that time - Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, on 27 January 1996.


March 1996
The renovation of Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (ITTM) campus commenced at a cost of RM30 million. The facilities upgraded were:
1. Faculty of Management/Creative Multimedia
2. FOSEE/Faculty of Engineering/Faculty of Information Technology
3. Student Centre/Hall
4. Centre of Information Technology Services
5. Library
6. Facilities Management/Security
7. Mosque
8. Hostel
9. Staff houses and quarters

This building - Block A (No 26 from the map) was renamed Faculty of Business and Law (FBL). The total built up area is 84,672 sqft.
During the early operation, this building housed Faculty of Management, Faculty of Creative Multimedia and FOSEE. It also housed small units like ASI, and CIRDE. When both faculties were moved to Cyberjaya Campus in 1998, the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) was set up in this building. The facilities in the building consist of:

Ground Floor : Theatre and Discussion Room
1st Floor : Lecturers’ offices from FOSEE and ADP, ADP computer laboratory, operation area for ADP
2nd Floor : FBL lecturers' offices, Studio A & B (Classrooms)
3rd Floor : Computer Laboratory, Discussion Room for FBL
4th Floor : Theater 3, classrooms, CCTD's Office, IBDP Office, APAC's office and lecturers offices.
5th Floor : FBL operating room, Dean's office, classrooms, lecturers’ Offices, MBA's Office and Meeting Room.


This building - Block B (No 22 from the map) was renamed as FOSEE building. The total built up area is 84,480 sqft.
During the early stage, this building housed FOSEE, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty Information of Technology, Finance Division, Admission, Human Resources department, President's Office and Marketing Division. After the process of the relocation from Melaka to Cyberjaya some faculties were relocated to the new building in Melaka , this building is now occupied by FOSEE , Admission, Centre of Research and Postgraduate Programmes (CRPP), School Relations & Programme Promotion Unit (SRPP), Finance Division, Government Relations Unit (GRU) and Examination & Records unit. The facilities in the building consist of :

Ground Floor : Examination & Records Unit Office, Meeting Room, Finance Division and Theater 1
1st Floor : SRPP Office, Theater 2, GRU, Admission and Finance Division
2nd floor : Lecture rooms, FOSEE Administration Office including Director's office
3rd floor : classrooms, Laboratories, CRPP and lecturers’ offices
4th Floor consists of classrooms, lecturers’ rooms
5th floor : Laboratories, classrooms and Lecturers’ offices


This building - Block E (No 21 from the map) was renamed Student Excellent Centre. The total built-up area is 84,480 sqft.
During the early stage, this building housed a canteen, mini market, the Main Hall, STAD office, CITS computer Laboratory, gymnasium, squash court and SRC Room. After the relocation, the building now housed SRC and student club, the Main hall, cafeteria, gymnasium and squash court. The facilities in the building consist of :

Ground floor : Cafeteria, squash court and Main Hall
1st Floor : SRC room, Meeting room , Guest area


This building - Block C (No 17 from the map) was renamed Examination Hall. The total built-up area is 19,800.00 sqft.
This building was formerly used as a Library. In the 1998 the university built an annex building covering an area of about 180 sqft. After the Library was relocated to the new building in 2000, Block C was used as an examination and exhibition hall.


This building - Block D (No 15 from the map) was renamed Centre for Information and Technology Services (CITS). The total built-up area is 24,640 sqft.
There were a total of 4 blocks located in this area. During the early stage of operation, this building was used as the CITS operation room, Engineering faculty's laboratory and computer Laboratory. The facilities in the building consist of :
CITS 1 : Administration and main server room.
CITS 2 : Administration office
CITS 3 : CITS Laboratories
CITS 4 : 4 units of classrooms

The other existing buildings such as the Mosque, President's apartment, Executive apartments, Staff quarters, Hostel and Block T (FMD's Office) remained as they are.

 

October 1996
In October 1996, Telekom Malaysia was given the honour by the Ministry of Education to set-up the first private university in Malaysia.

Attached is the press clipping of an announcement made by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on 9 October 1996. The announcement stated that Telekom Malaysia Berhad was officially invited to set up the first private university in Malaysia.


December 1996
